Awning Windows

Awning
Windows.

Hinged at the top and cranked outward — awnings ventilate even in the rain and tuck neatly above or beside other windows.

Awning Windows hinge at the top and open outward from the bottom, forming a small “awning” that lets you keep them open during a light rain. They’re ideal for bathrooms, kitchens, and basements, or stacked above a picture window for ventilation.

Like casements, they seal tightly against the frame when closed for excellent efficiency.

How it opens

Open, in the Rain.

The hinge is along the top edge and the crank pushes the bottom out, so the sash leans away from the wall and becomes a small roof over its own opening. Rain runs off it rather than in.

That is the whole reason to choose one. A double-hung or a slider has to be shut when the weather turns; an awning can stay open through a shower, which is why it belongs where you want air more than a view — over a counter, high on a wall, in a bathroom, on the side elevation facing the neighbor.

Closed, it seals by compression: the crank pulls the sash tight into the frame all the way round rather than letting it rest in a track. That is the same mechanism a casement uses, and it is why both seal better than anything that slides.

The other place they belong

Air Without an Audience.

Over a kitchen sink, an Awning Window buys you an easier way to open wide and an unobstructed view outside. In a bathroom it can buy you the opposite — optional patterned obscured glass you cannot see through in either direction, on a sash that still opens fully for air. The two uses are the same window doing opposite jobs, which is why it turns up in both rooms more than any other type.

What you’ll love.

Rain-friendly venting

The top hinge sheds water, so you can vent in light rain.
