Salem County is the least densely populated county in New Jersey and the oldest-built of the three that make up the state’s southwest corner. English Quakers settled here in the 1670s, a generation before Philadelphia existed, and what they and their descendants built is still standing: brick farmhouses from the 1700s, many of them with the patterned glazed brickwork — diamonds, zigzags, dates and initials worked into the gable end — that this county and its neighbor are known for above anywhere else in America. Around those farms sit small river towns on the Delaware and the tidal creeks, village centers with Federal and Victorian main streets, and the mid-century housing built in Pennsville and Carneys Point for workers at the chemical plants on the river. Very little of Salem County was built after 1970. That single fact drives everything about window work here.
Old houses are surveyed, not ordered from a catalog. We record what is there — sash proportions, muntin widths, reveal depths, which wing is original and which is later — and build units to the actual openings. Period-correct profiles sit in front of modern insulated low-E glass, so the elevation reads correctly from the road and the room finally holds its heat. Exposed and marsh-side elevations are specified differently from sheltered ones.
We will drive out to you, however far down the county road you are, and measure the whole house.
