Sea Isle City has a clean dividing line in its housing that almost no other shore town has. In March 1962 the Ash Wednesday storm sat over the coast for several tides and took the island apart, destroying or ruining an enormous share of its buildings. Very little of the Victorian and early-twentieth-century Sea Isle survived. What stands today began going up immediately afterwards: 1960s and 1970s single-story and split-entry cottages, plain and quickly built, designed to be replaceable. Those are now sixty years old themselves and are being demolished in their turn, replaced since the 1990s by tall duplexes and single-family houses on the same narrow lots. So the island runs on two clocks — a 1965 cottage on its original aluminum next to a 2019 building with forty openings.
On surviving 1960s cottages we replace whole houses of aluminum with insulated units sized to the existing openings, so no siding comes off a small building. On new and rebuilt properties we specify to the actual wind loads at each floor level and use corrosion-resistant hardware throughout. Where a house is set up for shutters or impact glazing, we make sure the replacement works with that system rather than against it.
If your house dates from the rebuild years, every window in it is the same age and the same condition.
